Athletics are an important part of the education experience in Gaston County Schools. We believe that sports help students grow by teaching teamwork, discipline, and leadership—lessons that go beyond the classroom.

Gaston County Schools follows the rules of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) as well as state and local policies. These guidelines help make sure our student-athletes focus on good sportsmanship and academic success.

Academic Requirements
To participate in sports, students must:

  • Be enrolled in at least three courses during the current semester.
  • Be in good academic standing and pass a minimum number of classes in the previous semester.
  • Meet local promotion standards set by the school district.

Note: Students entering the ninth grade are allowed to play sports during the first semester of high school.

Attendance Requirement
Students must attend school at least 85% of the previous semester to take part in athletics.

Medical Requirement
Before practicing or playing in any athletic event, a student must have a physical exam. This exam must be done by a licensed doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant, and it must be completed within the past 395 days.

Age Requirement
A student is not eligible to play high school sports if they turn 19 years old on or before August 31 of the current school year.

Insurance Coverage
Gaston County Schools provides extra insurance for all student-athletes through an “All Sports” policy. This coverage is not meant to pay all medical costs but is designed to help families with expenses related to athletic injuries.
